Sculptra aesthetic is a dermal filler used for treating a variety of contour deficiencies on the skin. Composed of the polymer poly-L-lactic acid, Sculptra actually stimulates long-term collagen growth for an enduring result. Sculptra was originally used to treat persons with HIV because they experienced facial lipoatrophy, a condition characterized by premature aging due to degradation of the tissue. In 2009, the FDA granted clearance for Sculptra to be used in cosmetic applications.
Patient Selection for SculptraAging causes skin to lose much of its structural integrity. The skin gets thinner and flatter and fat disappears, gradually changing your appearance. Sculptra was designed to counteract this process by correcting the telltale signs of collagen breakdown beneath the skin. Conditions such as the following are often treated with Sculptra:
Your Sculptra ProcedureSculptra produces a delayed result, so it’s best to inject a conservative amount for your first treatment. Using a fine needle, your plastic surgeon injects Sculptra under the skin using a special technique. Discomfort can be managed using a dental block or numbing cream. After your first treatment, another may be performed after about 4 weeks for best results. Results of Sculptra have been documented up to 1 year after the initial treatment. Are there possible side effects?Swelling, bruising, redness, lumps, bumps or granuloma formation can occur after Sculptra treatment. Side effects often resolve without treatment, but if this is a concern for you, please discuss it with your doctor during your consultation. |
